originally i wanted to format my paper a different way, but I could not find a new way to format my paper that was significantly different than what it is now. so i figured it wo uld not really make a difference. I also do not think t hat analyzing the papers i wrote really describes who i am. I mean I wrote about topics I chose and what interested me, but I do not think my writing actually defines who I am. I learned about how I write my best and when i write my best, but I do not think my personality comes out in all of my writing, especially if I am not writing about something I really like. However, writing this paper was fairly easy in my opinion I was writing about myself, and what do I know more about other than myself? A lot of times I found myself questioning myself whether or not the information I was putting into my autoethnography was really what was supposed to be included. I read the student assistant’s autoethnographies and they are all different, so I assumed that my paper was okay because it was also different than the student assistants. I also had a hard time coming up with a creative title. I ended up choosing “Why Is I?”. I chose this since my paper described why I am who I am, more than exactly what I am.

The first place I found for students to publish was a website. It was by the Scholastic book company so I thought it was a legitimate place to publish, rather than some place no one has heard of. I also chose this website because it was easy to navigate, and the published writing was easy to find. Another thing I liked about the Scholastic website was that you could create a portfolio of your work if you publish more than one piece of writing. If the critics like what you wrote they will offer you awards and an opportunity to publish elsewhere. I thought this website offered more than just a place to publish writing, it offered students the chance to really get their writing out there.

The next place I found to publish was a magazine called Teen Ink. I chose this publication, because it was different than the first one I chose. One of the reasons Ichose this one was because, like the name says it is only for teens. I also thought that it was cool that only students could write in this magazine, there are no professional hired writers. The submissions Teen Ink accepts can be anything from creative writing, to opinions on teen related issues. I liked that aspect of the magazine because there is no genre requirement, so students are free to write whatever they would like and still have the opportunity to get published.

The last location I chose was an online newspaper. I wanted to get three different places to publish. This one is called the College Publisher, or the College Media Network. It is the largest online student run newspaper and is run by MTVu. I figured this was a good way to get our papers out there, since it was run by a well known TV station that was watched by young adults. MTVu works to get student writing commercialized and help to gain income by advertising. This online newspaper is also promises that your publication will not get hacked, and allows students to join a publishing network.

What is your definition of autoethnography?

an autobiographical genre of writing that displays multiple layers of consciousness, connecting the person to the culture

autoethnography is a form of qualitative research where the researcher explores his or her own experience as a focus of investigation. It acknowledges the power of the researcher to explore his or her own life more closely than others are able, and it connects the personal story to the participatory cultures while engaging the reader to share in the vibrancy of the experience

How is autoethnography part of phenomenonology?

phenomoenology – phenomenology is the study of “phenomena”: appearances of things, or things as they appear in our experience, or the ways we experience things, thus the meanings things have in our experience. Phenomenology studies conscious experience as experienced from the subjective or first person point of view.

why did you choose your template?

I liked the bright colors, almost all of my stuff in my room is bright. Bright colors make me happy so I surround myself with them.

What do your links say about you?

I spend a lot of time with my sorority and I have made a lot of memories with them. So they mean a lot to me. I also put a link to my favorite store (american eagle).

Why don’t you have a picture?

I could not figure out how to make it load. The one i tried to load was rather silly, because i do a lot of weird things all the time and i’m hardly ever serious.

Why did you write what you did on your about me page?

my about me page is pretty general, it just has the basic things about me. where i’m from what i like to do…I don’t think it’s possible to explain everything about me, and i don’t think everyone needs to know everything about me. I would rather talk to someone than read about them, because I feel like I could get to know them better by seeing them in person. I also do not think there are that many interesting things about me so making a long about me would have been boring.

What is I?

I still agree with the first statement I wrote about what is I? I wrote about how everyone’s “I” is different, and it really is different. No person is exactly the same, and they shouldn’t be. I know I could not get along with multiple me’s. I also wrote about the types of things that makes a person different from everyone else, and I think that really defines what is i?

Hearing Workshop

This piece of music makes me think of something I would listen to when I wanted to relax, so it makes me think that you are a relaxed, calm person. This song also makes me think you enjoy coffee, because it sounds like something that would be played in a coffee shop.

The second song is entirely different than the first one. I think it is a little bit weird to be honest, it makes me think that you have a wide variety of music that you enjoy. Based on these two pieces of music I think that you are pleasant and upbeat because the music played seemed like happy songs.

This song makes me thing you are a chill person, not too crazy out of control go buck wild type person. I like this song and I usually listen to it when I’m just hanging out with a small group of friends just doing whatever. I really don’t feel like I can judge a person on what music they listen to because most people listen to a variety of different songs depending on their mood, or what they’re doing while they’re listening to music.

The difference between hearing and listening

To me the difference between hearing and listening is actually comprehending what is being said or done. For example the everyday sounds we hear is more of an example of hearing because is just background sound and there is nothing we can do but listen to the sounds. However, listening is actually taking into consideration what is being talked about. When I have a conversation with someone I listen to what they have to say and realize what they mean, but if I was just overhearing someone else’s conversation I would not be listening, because whoever was speaking was not directly talking to me. A lot of times I just have the TV on or music on for background sound because I don’t like sitting in the quiet. I would consider that hearing, because I am not really paying attention to what is on the TV or the music being played. When people age a lot of times they become hard of hearing, not hard of listening. Hearing also seems like having the ability to hear, use your ears and having all of correct workings of an ear. Blog #8 Hearing

I did not realize how much I enjoyed hearing until I sat down to do this blog. I listen to my friends talk, it’s basically the only was I contact my parents when I’m at school, and I enjoy waking up and hearing everything that is going on outside. Sometimes music can soothing or even change a bad mood into a good one. What most believe cause this calming feeling is the rhythmic beat all music has (Hollistic). Another way music can be calming is by listening to old favorite that bring back good memories, because they create a feeling of familiarty, and familiarty brings calmness (Hollistic).

I was extremely surprised to find how many different ways animals use the sense of hearing, to do other things than listening. Dolphins for example stun other creatures by making a loud bang (Ackerman). Something else that Diane Ackerman mentioned in the hearing section of the book was that those that are deaf and blind would much rather have the ability to hear than to see. It is hard for me to imagine that, but now that I think about it hearing is what connects me to so many people.

The sense of hearing, unlike almost all of the other sense is mechanical, meaning there are no chemical reactions that occur to allow you to hear (Harris). However the ear is a very sensitive thing, and can be damaged very easily. The hair cells in the ear are what are damaged when loud noises are the cause because they are what converts the sound energy into electrical signals (Harris). Unfortunatly these hair cells do not grow back. Protect your ears by listening to music at a low level and wearing ear protection when around loud noises.

Autoethnography

According to the University of South Floriday an autoethnography is definded as an autobiographical genre of writing that displays multiple layers of consciousness, connecting the personal to the cultural (Porter). After reading this definition it seems to me that an autoethnography consists of many different things. However, I think the main goal of this genre is to explain yourself to the reader it may also tell why the author has grown to become the person that they are. Some of the focuses of the writing may be on personal experiences, culture, and awareness of self (Autoethnography). While writing this paper I think that I may learn a few things about myself that I did not realize before, because I never sat down to actually think deeply about myself.

In a blog written by Jeffrey Keefer he defined autoethnography as follows: ”autoethnography is a form of qualitative research where the researcher explores his or her own experience as a focus of investigation. It acknowledges the power of the researcher to explore his or her own life more closely than others are able, and it connects the personal story to the participatory cultures while engaging the reader to share in the vibrancy of the experience (Keefer).”

I thought that he defined autoethnography quite accurately especially towards the end when he wrote about engaging the reader with the experiences written about. Which to me meant to get the reader really interested in my writing and about me. It was also interesting to me that he described autoethnography as an investigation of self. Which is really what it is, when I write this paper I am going to have to dig deep and really learn about myself. It sounds weird to me when I say “learn about myself” because I feel like I know everything about myself already.

An autoethnography may help others to understand the author better. Since culture and background are described there will be reasoning to the author’s life. Not only will culture be described, but past expierences and lifestyle. Basically I think that my autoethnography will explain virtually everything about my life to the reader. I don’t really know how I feel about that, because I am not usually a very open person about my personal experiences and this essay will give everyone a glimpse into my life.

Touch Workshop

Our first object felt like a child’s phone. I would have thought it was a remote control if it wouldn’t have made phone noises. I first thought I broke the object when I took the batter cover off the back, but that helped to figure out what our object was. The buttons on the object also helped us to decide what the object was, and the plastic cover on it also helped.
